| - James Todd Smith (born January 14, 1968), better known as LL Cool J, is an American rapper and actor. LL Cool J stands for "Ladies love Cool James." He is known for romantic ballads such as "I Need Love" and "Hey Lover" as well as pioneering hip-hop such as "Headsprung", "I Can't Live Without My Radio", "I'm Bad", "The Boomin' System", "Mama Said Knock You Out", and "4, 1". He has also appeared in several films. LL Cool J is one of a few hip-hop stars of his era to sustain a successful recording career for more than two decades. He has released twelve studio albums and a greatest hits compilation so far, with his latest album being 2008's Exit 13, the last for LL's record deal with Def Jam Recordings. He now resides in Manhasset, New York with his wife and four children. The couple has also adopted several times. (en)

Nel 1988 realizza il brano Goin' Back To Cali che fa parte della colonna sonora di Less Than Zero. Nel 1989 pubblica l'album Walking With A Panther, anticipato dal singolo I'm That Type of Guy, che viene accolto come un fenomeno anche nel mainstream musicale statunitense, tanto che LL Cool J rimedia bordate di fischi durante un liveshow all'Apollo. È un'avvisaglia di declino causato dal suo rap in antitesi con l'hardcore politico dei Public Enemy ed il G-funk dell'NWA. Con l'LP Mama Said Knock You Out recupera il successo, è il suo album più spinto dal punto di vista musicale, i singoli sono The Boomin' System e Around the Way Girl, entrambi al top delle classifiche R&B. LL è il primo artista rap a tenere un concerto Unplugged per MTV. L'album viene realizzato in collaborazione con il produttore Marley Marl. Il terzo singolo, Mama Said Knock You Out, vince il Grammy come Best Rap Solo e l'LP resta per oltre un anno nella Top Pop Album Chart di Billboard e oltre 70 settimane nella Top Black Album Chart. Nella primavera del 1993 anno esce 14 Shots To The Dome che inizialmente vende bene e conquista la vetta della top 10, ma non genera singoli di rilievo. Intanto LL esordisce nel piccolo schermo con la sitcom In The House. Nel 1995 ritorna con l'album Mr. Smith che diventa doppio platino, e realizza due dei suoi più noti singoli, Hey Lover, in collaborazione con i Boyz II Men, e Doin' It. Alla fine del 1996 esce un suo greatest hits, All World. L'anno dopo è la volta di Phenomenon, anticipato dal singolo omonimo. Nel 2000 esce G.O.A.T. Featuring James T.
