- Kritarchy refers to the rule of judges in ancient Israel during the period of time described in the Book of Judges. Because it is a compound of the Greek words for "judge" and "rule," its use has expanded to cover rule by judges in the modern sense, as well, as in the case of the Somalia, ruled by judges with the tradition of xeer, as well as the Islamic Courts Union.

In breve, in una critarchia la magistratura e la polizia sono disponibili in un libero mercato, il quale è considerato un principio di diritto naturale, in quanto scambio di beni e servizi scarsi. La critarchia è essenzialmente una speciale forma di stato riconducibile a diverse visioni sociali, considerato sotto l’aspetto giuridico del diritto naturale. Il termine è menzionato nel Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, nell’ Oxford English Dictionary e nell’ American Collegiate Dictionary. Secondo le sue radici etimologiche, la critarchia è un sistema politico in cui la giustizia è il fine dominante o la causa primaria. Diversa dalla Critarchia è la Critocrazia, dove il solo Stato naturale di diritto risulta composto unicamente dal sistema giudiziario.
