She first began performing professionally during the 1990s, recording background vocals for Peter Himmelman, Martin Zellar and other acts in the Twin Cites. Mooney’s solo debut, titled Living Alone, was released in 1998. The self-titled Kristin Mooney, came out in 2004. Mooney’s third CD, titled Hydroplane, was released in 2007.

Mooney sang harmonies with Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Steve Earle, John Doe, Jim James, Raul Malo, Jim Lauderdale and Jay Farrar as a member of the "house band" for the Return to Sin City--A Tribute to Gram Parsons DVD. Mooney's voice was often heard on the CBS drama Judging Amy with music written and performed by longtime collaborator Peter Himmelman. Mooney currently lives with her husband, Eric Heywood, in Los Angeles, California.
