  • Kpelle language is spoken by the Kpelle people. The language is part of the Mande family of languages. ISO 639 defines it as macrolanguage, with the more specific ones: Guinea Kpelle [gkp] (also known as Guerze in French), spoken by some 400,000-500,000 peope, concentrated primarily, but not exclusively, in the forest regions of Guinea, whose capital, Nzérékoré, is the third largest city in Guinea and the largest city in the Guinée Forestière region of south-eastern Guinea bordering Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Sierra Leone. Nzérékoré, formerly an important administrative and trading center for the French colonial masters for the forest region that also included parts of present day northern region of la Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)that grew rapidly after World War II and now known as a market town famous for its silverworking, has an estimated population of 300,000. The economic future of Nzérékoré may rely on rich iron deposits found near the city at Simandou (near Diéké), which is located east of Banankoro and to the west of Kerouane. Nzérékoré is very close to the Liberian border (about 30km). Liberia Kpelle [xpe],spoken by some 480,000 This language is currently taught in schools in Liberia.
