It is similar to the Korean salamander, Hynobius leechi, but is distinguished by factors including tail shape and dorsal coloration. The Kori salamander takes its name from Go-ri, a village in Hyoam-ri, Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, in rural northern Busan. The species is only known to inhabit the immediate vicinity of the type locality, although it may be more widespread.
