The DSS-1 (along with the rackmount DSM-1) turned out to be the company's only sampler until 1998 when Korg started including sampling options on their Triton and Trinity series of workstations, and on their Electribe series of drum-and-phrase samplers.

Le DSS1 possède une section de synthèse très évoluée qui permet une modification en profondeur des sons : 2 oscillateurs par voie, 1 filtre VCF 12/24 dB/octave résonnant, 1 VCA, 2 générateurs d'enveloppe, 1 LFO (nommé MG alias "modulation generator"). Il possède enfin un double délai numérique stéréo avec modulation, une première sur un échantillonneur à l'époque. Une carte d'extension tierce fut fabriquée durant une courte période. Très performante, elle portait la mémoire à 3 mégaoctets et incluait une interface SCSI permettant de stocker les sons sur des supports externes tels que le lecteur de cartouches Syquest. La version rack du DSS1 sortie 1 an plus tard, le DSM1, porte la mémoire à 1 mégacotet. Par contre, la résonnance des filtres et le délai numérique disparaissent. Parmi les musiciens l'ayant utilisé figurent Depeche Mode, Jean Michel Jarre et Joe Zawinul.
