- Kongunadu Munnetra Peravai (KMP) is a political party launched by "Kongu Vellala Gounder Peravai", a Kongu Vellalar community welfare organisation, now slowly evolving to include people from all communities in the Kongu region in its folds. At a conference held in Coimbatore on 15 February 2009, 'Best' S. Ramasamy was announced president, with E.R. Easwaran as the General Secretary. 627,000 people gathered, which is the biggest political party gathering in the history of India so far. The party's founders do not come from a political background, but from fields like agriculture, academics and business.. It aims to improve the overall development and welfare of the Kongu Nadu region. The region is ignored by the successive governments and by major political parties, prompting them to launch their own political forum to represent and address their grievances and find their own solutions within the Constitutional Framework. One of the major and critical issues the party aims to work towards is the pollution of the rivers Noyyal and Nallaru originating from the Kongu region with natural antibiotic minerals. The Nallaru, another river in Tiruppur area, is also facing the same plight due to the huge concentration of cloth dyeing factories dumping their industrial waste into the rivers. According to the President, the party will contest 12 Lok Sabha constituencies and 50 Legislative Assembly seats in the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Pollachi, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi and Dindigul in the western belt of Tamil Nadu. Though the party is started by a welfare organisation of a particular community, it is slowly evolving to represent a political forum of all people in the Kongunadu region, and has fielded candidates belonging to various backgrounds for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. It has been given the "Gas Cylinder" symbol for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections by the Election Commission of India. The party did not win any seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, but managed to get a considerable share of votes, without going for any alliances with the major political alliances led by DMK & ADMK, which is a quite a remarkable step considering their very recent political entry. They emerged as the third largest party in various constituencies, and second in Coimbatore constituency, where it fielded its general secretary, E.R. Easwaran.
