In Ukraine's rural west, they are popular dances for weddings. In North America, the kolomyjka is primarily a social dance. Participants form a circle, joining hands.

Залишаючись на перших порах місцевим, танець набув особливої популярності серед міського населення прилеглих областей у середині XIX-го сторіччя. Коломийкою також називають коротку пісню, яка виконується під характерну для танцю мелодію. Наприклад: А я тото дівчє люблю, Що біле як гусі. Воно мене поцілює, А я засміюсі.
