The exclave sits several kilometres away from what constitutes the main area of the TRNC and is a place which has special symbolic significance for the Cypriots because of the events of August 1964.

Die Bevölkerung bestand seinerzeit überwiegend aus Zypern-Türken, die in andere Teile Nordzyperns umsiedeln mussten. Heute dient der Ort rein militärischen Zwecken. Die Grenze zur Region Tylliria bildet die UN-Pufferzone, die von Friedenstruppen der Vereinten Nationen, der United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) überwacht wird.
  • Durante agosto de 1964, el gobierno Griego, a raíz de la situación que se vivía en Chipre, envía al Teniente General Georgios Grivas para enfrentar a las guerrillas Turco-chipriotas. Grivas, chipriota, era un héroe de la lucha griega durante la II Guerra Mundial. Para cumplimentar la misión, comienza con un incremento de la fuerza de la Guardia Nacional (NG) a través de la introducción clandestina a la isla de armamento y militares giregos. Entre mayo y julio se incorporan 9.000 soldados y 650 oficiales de esa nacionalidad. Una de las primeras tareas del militar griego sería abrir la ruta costera Paphos - Kyrenia. Ésta estaba cortada en el extremo norte de las montañas Tyrillias, sector bajo control turco con epicentro en las localidades de Mansoura y Kokkina. Esta última, aprovechando su puerto natural, era empleada por los turco - chipriotas como lugar de desembarco de armas para sus guerrillas.

Erenköy'ün halkı Türk'tür. Bu yerleşim biriminde 13 asker mezarı bulunmaktadır. Bu 13 asker Türkiye ve Kıbrıs Türkleri her sene bir kez bir tören ile anılmaktadır. Erenköy'de sivil halk yaşamamakta ancak Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk askerleri bulunmaktadır.
