- Known Space is the fictional setting of several science fiction novels and short stories written by author Larry Niven. It has also in part been used as a shared universe in the Man-Kzin Wars spin-off anthologies sub-series. The epithet "Known Space" is an in-universe term that refers to a relatively small part of the galaxy centered around Earth. In the future which the series depicts, ranging from a few centuries to about a millennium from now, this region has been explored by humans and a number of its worlds have been colonized. On other worlds aliens have been encountered, contact has been made with alien species such as the two-headed Pierson's Puppeteers and the aggressive felinoid Kzinti. The fictional universe is also the home of species outside Known Space as such, for instance the hominid inhabitants of a megastructure called Ringworld; the Ringworld orbits a sun outside of the spatial "region" known as Known Space, but it is a well-established artifact within the Known Space "universe". The stories span approximately one thousand years of future history, from the first human explorations of the Solar System to the colonization of dozens of nearby systems. Late in the series, this area is an irregularly shaped "bubble" about 60 light-years across. The stories that comprise the Known Space series were originally conceived as two separate series, the Belter stories, featuring solar-system colonization and slower-than-light travel with fusion-powered Bussard ramjet ships, and the Neutron Star/Ringworld series of stories, set much further into the future, which feature faster-than-light ships using "hyperdrive". The two timelines were implicitly joined by Niven in the story A Relic of the Empire, in which the background elements of the Slaver civilization (introduced in World of Ptavvs, from the Belter series) was used as a plot element of a story in the faster-than-light setting. Roughly 300 years separates the timeline of the last stories of the early setting (which are set roughly between 2000 and 2350), from the earliest stories in the later Neutron Star/Ringworld setting (which are set in 2651 and later). In the late 1980s, Niven opened up this gap in the known space timeline as a shared universe, and the stories of the Man-Kzin Wars volumes fill in that history, joining the two settings.

Známý vesmír má přibližně velikost 60 světelných let a počítá se do něho oblast, která je z větší části osídlena lidmi, či spadá do sféry vlivu lidstva. Známý vesmír ale není pouze po stránce rozměrové, ale má i svojí vlastní historii, která obsahuje tisíce let od prvního prozkoumávání Solárního systémů až po kolonizaci vzdálenějších planet. Často se zde ale vyskytují i odkazy několik miliónů až miliard let zpátky na starodávné rasy, které tuto část obývaly.

- Il Ciclo dello Spazio conosciuto è l'insieme di opere letterarie più conosciuto dello scrittore statunitense di fantascienza Larry Niven; è composto da sei romanzi, tre antologie (tradotte solo parzialmente in italiano) e alcuni racconti. La narrazione copre un arco temporale di circa mille anni, che va dalle prime esplorazioni spaziali all'interno del sistema solare, riconducibili ai giorni nostri, fino alla fine del millennio in corso; periodo in cui viene descritta l'espansione dell'umanità tra i sistemi planetari di altre stelle e la sua successiva integrazione tra le numerose specie aliene che lo abitano, pacifiche o meno. Le basi del ciclo sono tracciate in Tales of the Known Space (Racconti dello Spazio conosciuto). Sono descritti i primi tentativi di espansione della razza umana all'interno del sistema solare e poi oltre, verso i pianeti extrasolari; la costruzione di insediamenti minerari sugli asteroidi, e l'invenzione delle Slowboats, navi spinte da motori atomici Bussard. Stasi Interrotta è invece il primo romanzo del ciclo, e narra la storia del primo incontro tra gli uomini e una razza aliena. Incontro reso possibile solo grazie a poteri extrasensoriali che cominciano a diffondersi nell'umanità. Più avanti fanno la loro comparsa numerose nuove specie aliene, tra cui i Burattinai, una delle specie più affascinanti e cruciali per l'intera saga fantascientifica. Ecco come li descrive lo stesso Niven: "... Centauri senza testa e con tre gambe, che portano tra le braccia due burattini, ma le braccia sono teste vere piatte e prive di cervello, con ampie labbra flessibili. Il cervello è alloggiato sotto una gobba ossea... " Mentalmente paranoici e abilissimi negli intrighi, i Burattinai nascondono a tutti l'ubicazione del loro pianeta d'origine e delle colonie da loro abitate, che sposteranno, assieme ai loro soli, una volta scoperto che una reazione a catena di SuperNovae renderà inabitabile gran parte della Galassia nel giro di ventimila anni. La loro ricerca li porterà, assieme a esploratori umani e Kzinti, sul Mondo Anello o Ringworld, un gigantesco anello frutto di un'antica ed avanzatissima tecnologia, che sfrutta la forza centrifuga di rotazione per mantenere sulla sua superficie interna un habitat dall'estensione quasi sconfinata, di cui inizialmente si ignorano origine e costruttori. La storia di Ringworld e della sua esplorazione è descritta nei romanzi finali del ciclo: I burattinai, I costruttori di Ringworld, Il trono di Ringworld ed I figli di Ringworld. Ultimamenti Niven è tornato ad accentrare l'attenzione sulla Flotta dei Mondi burattinaia con il romanzo Fleet of Worlds del 2007 ed il successivo Juggler of Worlds di prossima uscita.
