Opened in 1910, the single track railway is used exclusively for ore-hauling freight trains. The line is the most northerly in the world. It was closed in 1997 when the mines were abandoned. It was opened again in 2009 since the mine was opened thanks to higher iron ore prices.

Den ble nedlagt i 1996, men som et ledd i den planlagte gjenåpninga av gruvene i Bjørnevatn har banen blitt gjenåpnet i 2009. Ombyggingen var klar våren 2009 og drift begynte i september. Banen er verdens nordligste jernbane. Det har heilt siden Sovjetunionens fall vært planer om å bygge jenbanelinje videre fra Kirkenes til Russland. Kirkenes–Bjørnevatnbanen har normalspor, og må da bygges om til russiskt spor, og også gruvebolagets lok og vogner.
