In the United Kingdom, it had a starting price of less than £10,000, right up to the end of production in 2004. This meant that it was competing on price, but not quality, with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 206, despite being of a comparable size to the likes of the Ford Focus. In the UK, Autocar Magazine described it as being "A gem that isn't left wanting in the handling department" and praised its "on-demand firecracker performance and particularly sweet free-revving 1.8-litre engine. " Sales were not particularly high, as the car's main attraction was its bargain price and it offered little in the way of dynamic qualities. The Mentor nameplate was dropped on hatchback models following the launch of the Kia Shuma in 1999, although the Mentor sedan was sold until the Kia Cerato range was launched in 2004. The Sephia/Mentor was also the basis of the Timor in Indonesia.

A mediados del 1995 el Kia Sephia fue reestilizado. El nuevo rediseño en estilo incluia una nueva parilla, focos delanteros y traseros reestilizados y nuevos bumpers para la absorbcion de impactos. La reestilizacion del Sephia trajo un nuevo motor de 4 cilindros 1.6L DOHC el cual generaba unos 105 caballos de fuerza o un motor mas potente de 4 cilindros 1.8L DOHC que producia unos 122 caballos de fuerza, ambos inluyendo las mismas opciones en transmision. Para el 1996 el motor de 1.6L SOHC fue descartado. Para este año el Sephia tenia disponible airbags en todos sus modelos. Durante el 1998 el Kia Sephia fue totalmente rediseñado trayendo como nuevos modelos el Sephia base, el LS y el LS power package todas las versiones incluian un motor 1.8L DOHC de 122 caballos de fuerza y disponibles con transmision manual de 5 velocidades o automatica de 4 velocidades con overdrive. Durante el año 2001 Kia lanzo un nuevo modelo hatchback llamado Spectra el cual termino suplantando al sedan compacto Sephia.
