Many influential music figures have called themselves fans of Coyne's work - notable among them are Sting and John Lydon. In the mid-1970s his band included guitarist Andy Summers prior to the formation of The Police. Prominent BBC disc jockey and world music authority Andy Kershaw described Coyne as, variously, "a national treasure who keeps getting better" and as one of the great British blues voices. Coyne produced the distinctive art work for many of his own album covers over the years, but his move to Germany in the 1980s saw his work on full size paintings blossom in its own right. Hij werkte aanvankelijk als sociaal werker in Lancashire. Daarna als raadsman voor drugsverslaafden. Deze periode is een belangrijke inspiratiebron geweest voor zowel zijn vroege als latere songs. Vanaf 1973 volgden er acht zeer productieve jaren. Het leverde in totaal elf LP's op. Vooral met Millionairs and teddy bears en Pointing the finger vergaarde hij bekendheid. Daarnaast toerde hij door Canada, Australië, de V.S. en Europa. Ook werkte hij in het theater met twee zelfgeschreven musicals. Hierna volgde een complete inzinking die behalve door de hectiek van de afgelopen tijd ook te wijten zou zijn geweest aan overmatig drankgebruik. Enkele sombere albums dateren uit die periode. In 1985 vertrok Coyne voorgoed naar Neurenberg alwaar hij met de Duitse Paradise Band een nieuwe start maakte, zonder drank. Zijn carrière als schrijver, schilder en singer-songwriter bloeiden in deze periode van zijn leven. Hij is drie keer getrouwd geweest en had drie zoons.
