- Kevin Brownlow is a filmmaker, film historian, television documentary-maker, and author. Brownlow is best known for his work documenting the history of the silent era. Brownlow developed an interest in silent film at the young age of eleven. This interest grew into a life-long passion for the cinema and a career spent documenting and restoring film. He is without question one of the most respected and admired historians of the early cinema and has rescued many a silent film and its history from oblivion. His initiative and interest in seeking out and interviewing many largely forgotten, elderly film pioneers in the 1960s and 1970s is credited with preserving a priceless legacy of cinema that would have otherwise been lost.
- Kevin Brownlow ist ein britischer Filmhistoriker, Autor und Regisseur von Fernsehdokumentationen. Brownlow entwickelte schon in jungem Alter ein Interesse für Stummfilme. Daraus entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Leidenschaft für das Kino und Filmgeschichte (insbesondere deren Frühzeit), die seine Karriere in der Filmdokumentation und -restauration begründet. In den 1960er Jahren besuchte und interviewte er zahlreiche bereits ältere und vergessene Filmpioniere und sicherte damit Zeitzeugenmaterial einer sonst verlorengegangenen Epoche des Films. Das Interviewmaterial verarbeitete er in dem Buch The Parade's Gone By... , seinem zum Standardwerk avancierten Erstlingswerk über die Stummfilmzeit aus dem Jahre 1968 (dt. Pioniere des Films, erschienen 1997). Seine Faszination für den Zweiten Weltkrieg brachte ihn selbst auf die Seite der Filmemacher, indem er die Geschichte in seinem „alternativen“ Historienfilm It Happened Here (1966) verkehrte und die Nazis gegen die Alliierten gewinnen ließ. Der Film erhielt eine BAFTA-Award-Nominierung. Die Produktion dauerte für ihn und seinen Freund Andrew Mollo acht Jahre, länger dauerte gar noch die Produktion ihres nächsten Filmes Winstanley (1975). Brownlow, selbst Filmsammler, verbrachte Jahre damit, Unterstützung für sein Projekt der Restauration des Filmklassikers Napoléon von Abel Gance aus dem Jahre 1927 zu bekommen. Der Film ist ein frühes Beispiel für die Splitscreen-Technik bzw. das Widescreen-Format. Seine Bemühungen waren mit den Aufführungen der etwa fünfstündigen restaurierten Fassung unter Anwesenheit des Regisseurs Gance 1980 in Paris und 1981 in New York gekrönt. Zu dieser Zeit begann auch eine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit Brownlows mit David Gill, mit dem er mehrere preisgekrönte Dokumentationen über die Stummfilmzeit produzierte. Die erste davon war die 13teilige Reihe Hollywood, die 1979 für Thames Television zusammengestellt wurde. 1983 folgte Unknown Chaplin, 1987 Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow, 1989 Harold Lloyd: The Third Genius und 1996 die sechsteilige Reihe Cinema Europe: The Other Hollywood. Gill und Brownlow restaurierten und veröffentlichten in den 1980er und 90er Jahren durch Thames Silents eine große Anzahl weiterer Stummfilmklassiker, die allesamt mit neuer Musikbegleitung von Carl Davis versehen wurden. Nach Gills Tod im Jahr 1997 fuhr Brownlow gemeinsam mit Patrick Stanbury fort, bei Photoplay Productions Dokumentationen zu produzieren. Zu den jüngsten gehören Garbo (2005), eine Produktion für Turner Classic Movies anlässlich Greta Garbos 100. Geburtstages, und I Am King Kong (2005) über den Filmemacher Merian C. Cooper.

Il est l'un des grands spécialistes de l'histoire du cinéma muet, auquel il a consacré une large partie de sa carrière. On lui doit notamment la reconstitution la plus importante du Napoléon d'Abel Gance, auquel il a consacré une vingtaine d'année, identifiant 19 versions différentes. On lui doit également de nombreux travaux, sous forme de livres et de films, sur cette période du cinéma : Buster Keaton, D. W. Griffith, Charles Chaplin ont ainsi fait l'objet de films documentaires de sa part. Il a également réalisé, plusieurs films de fiction, notamment En Angleterre occupée (It Happened Here), en 1962, co-réalisé avec Andrew Mollo, histoire-fiction qui raconte l'occupation de l'Angleterre après son invasion par les nazis en 1940; il est aussi l'auteur de Winstanley qui montre l'histoire authentique d'un groupe de protestants du Surrey, qui tenta d'établir, en 1649, une communauté agricole fondée sur un communisme chrétien.
