Constructed in 1912 as a factory, the building was purchased by the Communist Party of Germany (Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands, KPD) in 1926 and became the seat of its Central Committee. Named in honor of Karl Liebknecht, the KPD leader who was assassinated by a military death squad in January 1919, the building was the focus of one of the last mass demonstrations in Berlin against the Nazi Party on January 25, 1933—five days before Adolf Hitler was appointed German Chancellor. By then, the KPD was the third-largest party in Germany. Berlin police raided the headquarters three weeks later, and by March 1 the Nazi swastika flag was flying over the building. Renamed the Horst Wessel House, the building at first served as a district police station and detention center where Jews and political opponents were tortured. In 1935, the finance department of the state of Prussia moved into the building. Severely damaged during World War II, the building was repaired in 1948 and the name "Karl Liebknecht House" restored. It housed the East German Institute for Marxism-Leninism after 1950. The building became the headquarters for the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS)—the reformed successor of East Germany's former ruling party—in May 1990. In 2005, the PDS was renamed "The Left Party. PDS" in preparation for its merger with the Party of Social Justice-Electoral Alternative (WASG). The building continues to serve as the headquarters of the new party which is called simply "The Left", after the merger was completed in June 2007. The Karl Liebknecht House is a protected national landmark.

Das Gebäude wurde 1910 im Auftrag des Fabrikanten Rudolph Werth als Bürogebäude erbaut. Es wurde nach Karl Liebknecht benannt, als die KPD das Haus im November 1926 erwarb. Zunächst waren das Zentralkomitee der KPD, die KPD-Bezirksleitung Berlin-Brandenburg-Lausitz-Grenzmark, die Redaktion der KPD-Zeitung Die Rote Fahne, eine Buchhandlung, das Zentralkomitee des Kommunistischen Jugendverbandes Deutschlands, ein Laden für Uniformen des Roten Frontkämpferbundes und eine Druckerei dort untergebracht. Die Politische Polizei durchsuchte im Februar 1933 mehrmals das Karl-Liebknecht-Haus und am 26. Februar wurde es geschlossen. Die SA besetzte das Gebäude am 8. März 1933 und benannte es um in Horst-Wessel-Haus. Zunächst als „wildes“ KZ zur Terrorisierung von NS-Gegnern benutzt, diente es später der Abteilung zur Bekämpfung des Bolschewismus der Politischen Polizei, dann der Gestapo. Nach einem Umbau war es seit 1935 der Sitz des Katasteramts der preußischen Finanzverwaltung und ab 1937 der SA-Gruppe Berlin-Brandenburg. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Haus teilweise zerstört. 1949 wurde es mit geringen Fassadenveränderungen sowie um ein Geschoss erweitert erneut aufgebaut. Das Gebäude wurde zunächst von der SED, später vom Institut für Marxismus-Leninismus als Büro- und Gästehaus genutzt. Von 1990 bis 2007 befand sich in dem Gebäude die Parteizentrale der Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus und gleichzeitig deren Berliner Landesvorstand. Seit der Parteineubildung mit der WASG ist es die Zentrale des Bundesverbandes der Partei Die Linke. Es beherbergt heute außerdem Büros und Geschäfte.
