Karkwa is a Quebec indie rock band. Formed in 1998, the group consists of vocalist and guitarist Louis-Jean Cormier, keyboardist François Lafontaine, bass guitarist Martin Lamontagne, percussionist Julien Sagot and drummer Stéphane Bergeron. After reaching the final stages of the Francouvertes contest in 2001, the band released its debut album, Le Pensionnat des établis, in 2003.

The album's single "Poisson cru" reached the top of Quebec's campus radio charts, and was named the best album of the year by two critics for Montreal's alternative weekly Voir. The band's second album, Les Tremblements s’immobilisent, won three Félix Awards in 2006. In 2007, they were featured, along with The Stills, The Besnard Lakes and Mahjor Bidet, on the bill of Quebec Scene, a concert in Ottawa sponsored by CBC Radio 3. The band's name is a phonetic rendering of carquois, the French term for a quiver of arrows.

Il est composé au départ de Louis-Jean Cormier, Martin Pelletier (anciennement de la formation nord-côtière Kalembourg), Michel Gagnon, Stéphane Bergeron, François Lafontaine et Julien Sagot. Ils atteignent la finale provinciale de ce concours en 1999, puis ont l'occasion de faire une dizaine de prestations en France grâce à une collaboration de l'Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse. Michel Gagnon, guitariste et chanteur quittera la formation en 2001 de même que Martin Pelletier qui sera remplacer par Martin Lamontagne à titre de bassiste du groupe. Karkwa dans sa forme définitive atteindra en 2001 la finale des Francouvertes. Le groupe a produit trois albums, soit Le pensionnat des établis en novembre 2003 et Les tremblements s'immobilisent en novembre 2005, sous l'étiquette Audiogram et avec la participation exceptionnelle de la chanteuse culte Brigitte Fontaine. Le volume du vent, paru en avril 2008, comptait quant à lui sur la participation du chanteur montréalais Patrick Watson. Ils ont été invités à faire des prestations dans le cadre du Festival d'été international de Québec, des Coup de cœur francophone de Québec et de Montréal ainsi que des FrancoFolies de Montréal et de Spa. Lors du gala de l'ADISQ en 2008, Karkwa a remporté deux prix : celui du meilleur groupe et celui de l'auteur ou compositeur de l'année.
