The Anatolian Turkish Beylik of Karesi, with its capital in Balıkesir, was one of the frontier principalities established by Oghuz Turkish clans after the decline of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm. They were the first beylik to be taken over by the neighboring Osmanoglu dynasty, who were later to found the Ottoman Empire. The acquisition of Karesi allowed the Ottomans to begin the conquest of European lands in Rumelia across the Dardanelles.

The Turkish province (sanjak, later vilayet) of Balıkesir was called the sub-province (sanjak, later vilayet) of Karesi until the early years of the Republic of Turkey, after which it was re-named after its central town Balıkesir.
  • El Beylik de Karesi-oğhlu (també anomenat Karesi, Karasi, o Karesioğulları, o Gabella del Cap de l'Artaqui) va ser un dels Beyliks Turcs d'Anatòlia entre 1299 i 1361 i estava situat aproximadament a la regió de la Mar de Màrmara, a l'actual Turquia, amb capital a Balikesri. Fundat inicialment com un beylik vassall del Beylik de Germiyan-oğhlu, el 1299 se n'independitzà. El 1303 inicià el setge del Cap de l'Artaqui, però el setembre del 1303 les seves tropes foren derrotades i massacrades per la Companyia Catalana d'Orient en la Batalla del riu Cízic. Posteriorment, aquest beylik fou el primer en ser capturat pel Beylik d'Osman-oğhlu, que posteriorment donaria lloc a l'imperi Otomà. La conquesta del Beylik de Karesi-oğhlu possibilità als otomans la posterior conquesta de les terres d'Europa i la captura final de Constantinoble.
  • Les Karesioğullari sont les membres d’une tribu turque arrivée sur la rive orientale du détroit des Dardanelles et de la mer de Marmara pendant l'époque des beylicats après la chute du sultanat seldjoukide de Roum. Ils sont aussi appelés Karasioğullari ou Beys de Karasi. Ils créent une petite et éphémère principauté avec pour capitale Balıkesir (vers 1303). Les Ottomans ne contrôlent à cette époque que la rive asiatique du Bosphore. Ces deux petits états sont face aux restes du prestigieux empire byzantin. Le beylicat des Karesioğullari est le premier à être annexé par les Ottomans pendant le règne d’Orhan en 1345 ce qui laisse les Ottomans seuls face aux Byzantins.

Bu yöredeki ilk Türk devletidir. Karesi Beyliği, komşusu olan Osmanoğulları Beyliği'nin genişlemesiyle bu beyliğe katılmıştır. Böylece Osmanlı hakimiyetine katılan ilk beylik olmuştur. İlerleyen dönemlerde Osmanlı Devleti içinde bu bölgede Karesi Sancağı kurulmuştur. Karesi beylerinin ve ileri gelen şahıslarının, Osmanoğullarının egemenliği altına girmelerini takiben, Osmanlı Devleti'nin Rumeli topraklarında yayılmasında büyük katkıları olmuştur. Balıkesir ili Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ilk yıllarına kadar idari taksimatta Karesi ismini taşımıştır.
