Les équipes des Jayhawks participent aux compétitions universitaires organisées par la National Collegiate Athletic Association. Kansas fait partie de la division Big 12 Conference. L'équipe de football américain débute ses activités en 1890. Ses rivaux les plus anciens sont les Missouri Tigers. La première opposition entre ces deux formations date de 1891. Longtemps surnommé Border War, ce match fut rebaptisé Border showdown après les attentats du 11 septembre 2001. En 2007, la confrontation du Border Showdown a pris une envergure nationale, mettant aux prises les Kansas Jayhawks, numéro 2 au classement national contre les Missouri Tigers, numéro 4. Malgré une défaite dans ce match historique (36-28) joué à Kansas City devant 80.537 spectateurs, les Jayhawks remporteront l'Orange Bowl à Miami contre Virginia Tech le 3 janvier 2008. L'équipe de basket-ball revendique cinq titres nationaux : 1922, 1923, 1952, 1988 et 2008. De plus, Kansas s'inclina cinq fois à la finale NCAA. L'inventeur du basket-ball, James Naismith (entraîneur), et l'un des joueurs légendaire de ce sport, Wilt Chamberlain, évoluèrent aux Kansas Jayhawks. De nombreux joueurs ont ensuite évolué au sein de la NBA, notamment Danny Manning, Paul Pierce, Drew Gooden et Mario Chalmers.
