Kannur, also known as Cannanore, is a city in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the administrative headquarters of the District of Kannur. During British rule in India, Kannur was known by its old name Cannanore(Land of lord Krishna), which is still in fairly common usage. It is the largest city of North Malabar region. Kannur Municipality was established in 1867 and is one of the oldest municipalities in Kerala.

Kannur blieb unter portugiesischer Kontrolle, ehe es Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts von den Niederländern erobert wurde. Diese verkauften die Stadt 1771 an die lokale Herrscherfamilie der Ali Rajas, die einzige muslimische Herrscherdynastie Keralas. In den Mysore-Kriegen schlug sich Kannur auf die Seiten Tipu Sultans, was zur Folge hatte, dass die Briten die Stadt erstmals 1783 und endgültig 1790 eroberten. Kannur wurde als Teil des Distrikts Malabar in die Präsidentschaft Madras eingegliedert. Nach der indischen Unabhängigkeit kam die Stadt 1956 zum neugegründeten Bundesstaat Kerala und wurde Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Kannur. Kannur is the fourth largest urban agglomeration in Kerala after Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode, and has an estimated population of 5,74,876 in 2010. Kannur is known as the Land of Looms and Lores, because of the loom industries functioning in the district and ritualistic folk arts held in temples. Kannur is famous for its pristine beaches; Theyyam, its native performing art, and its handloom industry. Kannur is of great strategic military importance. It houses one of the 62 military cantonments in the country, the Kannur Cantonment, and is the current headquarters of the Defence Security Corps. Ezhimala Naval Academy (INS) which is situated 12 km from Payyanur, a city in Kannur. It is the Asia's largest and world's third largest naval academy. A Coast Guard Academy is approved to be built at Kannur. Kannur Contentment is also one of the important cantonments in India. Uma pintura deste forte, vendo-se barco com pescadores na Baía (de Mappila) está exposta no Rijksmuseum in Amsterdão. A cabeça de Kunjali Marakkar foi exibida na fortaleza depois do seu assassinato. Aqui a polícia do Kerala está presente com seis oficiais de polícia afectados ao turismo para a proteção e guia dos turistas. Um deles, chamado Sathyan Edakkad escreveu e publicou um livro sobre esta fortaleza, intitulado Vasco da Gaamayum Charithrathile Kaanaappurangalum (Vasco da Gama e as páginas da história nunca vistas).
