His portrayals of Mandar Bose in Sonar Kella, Pritish Sarkar in Nayak, Mantu Dutta in Phera and Juggler Haroon Al Rashid in Fatikchand are considered his best roles. Satyajit Ray's wife recollected an interesting story in her memoirs of how Kamu started acting in Ray movies.

Mukherjee died on December 6, 2003 from rheumatoid arthritis, from which he had suffered for the past ten years, almost bedridden.
