- Kamal Haasan is an Indian film actor, script writer, producer, and director, considered one of the leading method actors of Indian cinema. Haasan is known for winning several Indian film awards, including four National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, and has the distinction of being the actor with the most number of films submitted by India in contest for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He is also a lyricist, playback singer and choreographer. His film production company, Rajkamal International, has produced several of his films. Two notable films he has directed include Hey Ram (2000) and Virumaandi (2004). Kamal Haasan's breakthrough as a lead actor came with his role in the 1975 drama Apoorva Raagangal, in which he played a rebellious youth in love with an older woman. He secured his first Indian National Film Award for his portrayal of a guileless school teacher who tends a child-like amnesiac in 1982's Moondram Pirai. He was particularly noted for his performance in Mani Ratnam's Godfatheresque Nayagan (1987), which was ranked by Time magazine as one of the best films of all time.

Bien qu'il ait commencé sa carrière en 1959 à 5 ans en tant que child artist, c'est en 1975, dans le drame en tamil Apoorva Raagangal qu'il obtient une reconnaissance en tant qu'acteur. En 1982, il remporte son premier National Film Award pour Moondram Pirai. Après 7 ans de formations loin des caméras, il revient pour une série de seconds rôles en 1972. Il a ensuite souvent formé une paire avec l'actrice Sridevi. En 1981, après son 100e film en tant qu'acteur, il devient producteur et apparait aussi dans des films en hindi issus de Bollywood tels : Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Saagar (remportant deux Filmfare Awards pour Best Actor et Best Supporting Actor) Dekha Pyar Tumhara, Geraftaar, Aakhri Sangram, Karishma, Raj Tilak Suraj, Yaadgar, Ek Nai Paheli, Yeh Desh, Pyasa Shaitan, Sadma, Yeh To Kamaal Ho Gaya, Dil Ka Sathi Dil, Afsana Do Dilon Ka, Sanam Teri Kasam, Do Dil Diwane, Hey Ram Chachi 420. Il apparaît aussi dans des films en télougou, en malayalam et en bengali.
