It is the southern terminus of the Kalavryta - Diakopto Road and the eastern terminus of the Patras - Kalavryta Road. It is the largest municipality covering about 18% of the prefecture and is the least populated municipality in density. It also has the most number of communes in the prefecture. It is located approx. 40 km S of Aigio, 38 km S of GR-8/E65, about 190 km W of Athens, about 85 km NNW of Tripoli and about 130 km NE of Olympia.

Der Ort liegt im fruchtbaren Hochtal des zum Golf von Korinth entwässernden Flusses Vouraikos am südlichen Hang in ca. 740 m Höhe, westlich flankiert vom Gebirgsmassiv des Erymanthos, 2221 m. Östlich dominiert, in großer Nähe, das Gebirgsmassiv des Aroania, 2338 m. In dieser Gebirgslandschaft kommt es zwischen Dezember und April zu reichlichen Niederschlägen. Der Fluss führt daher das ganze Jahr über Wasser, obwohl diese Landschaft, wie fast der ganze Peloponnes, durch Karstphänomene und sehr regenarme Sommer geprägt ist.

Le village fut ensuite incendié, ainsi que le monastère d'Aghia Lavra, où avait commencé la guerre d'indépendance.

Kalávryta is verbonden met Diakofto aan de noordkust van de Peloponnesos door onder andere een 22 kilometer lange smalspoorverbinding die de loop van de Vouraïkos volgt. Bijzonder kenmerk van deze verbinding is het Abt tandradspoor dat is toegepast op de steile berghellingen. Kalavryta staat bekend om zijn aangename en gezonde klimaat 's zomers, en wordt alleen al daarom druk bezocht. Het is bovendien een geschikt uitgangspunt voor een bezoek aan de kloosters van Agia Lavra en Mega Spileo, en recentelijk werden ook de mogelijkheden als wintersportcentrum ontdekt.
