The succulent plant species Kalanchoe rhimbopilosa is a member of the Saxifragales family Crassulaceae genera. The common family name is stonecrop. This classification includes K. rhimbopilosa var. argentia and K. rhimbopilosa var. viridifolia. This species of plant is endemic to southwest Itampolo Madagascar. This plant was identified by Mannoni & Boiteau in 1947 and is indexed in Notul. Syst. (Paris) 13:153-154, (1947). The plant grows to 10-20 cm in height.

  • The succulent plant species Kalanchoe rhimbopilosa is a member of the Saxifragales family Crassulaceae genera. This plant is a perennial and herbaceous. A dwarf compared to the largest species of Kalanchoe K. beharensis which can grow as tall as 6 meters. Identifying features include thick stems and leaves (2-3 cm) as well as extreme variation in leaf color among individuals. The colors can range from grey to dark green with varying amounts of brown spots. The leaf insertion petolate and occurs alternately or oppositely. The leaf shape is obovate with an adaxiallary upper lamina surface and a reciprocating abaxiallary lower surface. Small pale yellow flowers form on the plant when day length is between 8 and 10 hours and can be forced to flower by modifying sun exposure to the short day cycle simply by moving it out of the sun for a couple hour a day. Sexual reproduction produces a tiny, nearly microscopic seed and asexual reproduction occurs readily through dropped leaves. This fragmentation propagation quality has lead to many members becoming invasive species outside of their native environment. This plant is slow growing in Madagascar but much more vivacious in more humid temperate climates. K. rhimbopilosa is a Crassulaceae Acid Metabolism (CAM) plant to effectively utilize water resources in the dry climate. Several other genuses of plants have evolved this method of metabolism including Cacti, Bryophyllum and Sedum. The latter two are of the family Crassulaceae common family stonecrop like K. rhimbopilosa but it appears that this method evolved separately nonetheless. CAM plants have a unique ability to fix carbon at night creating a temporal difference in photosynthetic activities to conserve water and increase efficiency. The night time carbon fixing occurs in the same cell as the daytime electron collecting unlike the process in c4 plants where these processes are spatially separated for the same reasons in to different cells. CAM plants are found in 23 families of flowering plants and includes the pineapple. Pineapples will taste sour during the day due to the malic acid stored in vacuoles for use as a carbohydrate in photosynthesis. This is why pineapples are best harvested in the evening or night. Some members of the family are used medicinally in traditional and western societies but K. rhimbopilosa has no known medical uses. A relative of this plant has become an ornamental sold in grocery stores at Christmas and Mother’s day labeled only Kalanchoe. They are a very pretty variety which has thick dark green leaves with no brown spots and little pink flowers. They form and leaf shape is very similar to K. rhimbopilosa.
