Field Marshal Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy GCB GCMG MVO (11 September 1862 – 6 June 1935) was a British Army officer who, between 1921 and 1926, served as the Governor General of Canada.   • Field Marshal Julian Hedworth George Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy GCB GCMG MVO (11 September 1862 – 6 June 1935) was a British Army officer who, between 1921 and 1926, served as the Governor General of Canada. Known to friends as "Bungo", he was born to a noble family in Hertsmere, England, and educated at Eton College, along with his brothers. Upon graduation, Byng enlisted as a regular soldier in the militia, and thereafter rose in the ranks of the army, with help from his father's connections with the Prince of Wales. He saw service in Egypt and Sudan before he enrolled in the Staff College at Camberley, where he befriended individuals who would later become influential military leaders. Following distinguished service with the British Expeditionary Force in France during World War I – specifically, in the Battle of Gallipoli, as commander of the Canadian Corps, and as commander of the British Third Army – Byng was in 1919 himself elevated to the peerage. On the recommendation of then British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, Byng was appointed by George V, the king of Canada, as the Canadian viceroy, succeeding in that role Victor Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire. Byng proved to be a popular viceroy with Canadians, due to his war leadership, though his stepping directly into political affairs became the catalyst for widespread changes to the role of the Crown in all of the British Dominions. After the end of his viceregal tenure, Byng returned to the United Kingdom and there served as the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis and was promoted within the peerage to become Viscount Byng of Vimy. Three years after being appointed as a field-marshal, Byng died at his home on 6 June.

Urażony King podał się do dymisji, zaś Byng powierzył misję tworzenia nowego rządu byłemu premierowi Meighenowi, który jednak nie zdołał sformować gabinetu. Byng nie miał już wyjścia i musiał zgodzić się na wybory, które przywróciły do władzy Kinga. Kryzys ten był jednym z głównych powodów umieszczenia w deklaracji kończącej konferencję imperialną z 1926 zapisu, iż odtąd wyłącznymi przedstawicielami interesów brytyjskich w dominiach są wysocy komisarze, zaś gubernatorzy generalni stają się organami stricte wewnętrznymi (i w sposób dorozumiany, faktycznie podporządkowanymi premierom). Wkrótce po powrocie do Anglii, Byng został podniesiony do godności wicehrabiego. Otrzymał także symboliczny awans na stopień wojskowy marszałka polnego (czynną służbę zakończył jako generał). W latach 1928-1931 dowodził londyńską policją, po czym przeszedł na emeryturę.
