- A jug band is a band employing a jug player and a mix of traditional and home-made instruments. These home-made instruments are ordinary objects adapted to or modified for making of sound, like the washtub bass, washboard, spoons, stovepipe and comb & tissue paper. The term jug band is loosely used in referring to ensembles that also incorporate home-made instruments but that are more accurately called skiffle bands, spasm bands or juke (or jook) bands because they are missing the required jug player. In the early days of jug band music, guitar and mandolins were sometimes made from the necks of discarded guitars fastened to large gourds. The gourds were flattened on one side, with a sound-hole cut into the flat side, before drying. Banjos were sometimes made from a discarded guitar neck and a metal pie plate. The eponymous jug sound is made by taking a jug (usually made of glass or stoneware) and buzzing the lips into its mouth from about an inch away. As with brass instruments, changes in pitch are controlled by altering lip tension, and an accomplished jug player could have a two octave range. The stovepipe (usually a section of tin pipe, 3" or 4" in diameter) is played in much the same manner, with the pipe rather than the jug being the resonating chamber. There is some similarity to the didgeridoo, but there is no contact between the stovepipe and the player's lips. Some jug and stovepipe players utilize throat vocalization along with lip buzzing, as with the didgeridoo. The swooping sounds of the jug fill a musical role halfway between the trombone and sousaphone or tuba in Dixieland bands, playing mid- and lower-range harmonies in rhythm. Early jug bands were typically made up of African American vaudeville and medicine show musicians. Beginning in the urban south, they played a mixture of Memphis blues (even before it was formally called the blues), ragtime, and jazz music. The history of jug bands is related to the development of the blues. The informal and energetic music of the jug bands also contributed to the development of rock and roll. The well known Memphis jug bands were small street groups, performing generally on Beale Street, and had their own blues style, using guitar, harmonica, banjo and a jug to accompany their blues and dance songs.

Sie spielten eine energiereiche populäre Musik, die zur Weiterentwicklung des Blues und zur Entstehung des Rock'n'Roll beitrug. In den 1930ern kamen Jug-Bands mit dem Aufkommen des Swing aus der Mode. Die bekanntesten Jug-Bands waren Gus Cannons Jug Stompers, deren Song Walk Right In Ende der 1920er ein Hit war und in den 1960ern durch die Rooftop Singers ein Revival erlebte, sowie vor allem die Memphis Jug Band. Spätere erfolgreiche Jug-Bands waren die Jim Kweskin Jug Band und die Even Dozen Jug Band mit Maria Muldaur und Joshua Rifkin. Auch moderne Rockbands spielen bisweilen Jug-Band-Musik, zum Beispiel Willie And The Poor Boys von Creedence Clearwater Revival und Jug Band Music von The Lovin’ Spoonful. Deren Kopf John Sebastian gründete auch die J-Band, bei der neben jüngeren Musikern auch Yank Rachell, ein Jug-Band-Veteran, mitspielte. Darüber hinaus war der Jug ein kennzeichnendes Element der Psychedelic-Band 13th Floor Elevators. Es gibt auch heute noch ursprüngliche Jug-Bands. Jährlich findet im Oktober in Sutter Creek, Kalifornien, ein JugFest statt.

Si la musique de jug band est née à Louisville dans le Kentucky au début du XXe siècle, c'est à Memphis dans le Tennessee qu'elle s'est véritablement développée. Les jug bands jouaient un mélange de Memphis blues, de ragtime et de musique plus traditionnelle. La musique énergique des jug bands visait à faire danser le public et elle a contribué au développement du rock and roll.

Questi strumenti autocostruiti sono oggetti ordinari adattati o modificati per emettere suoni, come il bidofono, il lavatoio, i cucchiai, il pettine con la carta velina. Il termine jug band è usato in un'accezione più ampia per indicare gruppi che comprendono anch'essi strumenti autocostruiti ma che sono chiamati più accuratamente skiffle bands, spasm bands e juke bands perché non vi è alcun suonatore di 'jug'. Nelle prime jug bands, chitarre e mandolini erano spesso costruiti a partire dai manici di chitarre rotte, legate a grosse zucche. Le zucche venivano spiattate su un lato, con un buco per propagare il suono, prima di farle seccare. I banjo erano spesso costruiti con un manico di chitarra e una tortiera.. Il suonatore di jug prende la bottiglia e fa delle pernacchie con le labbra alla distanza di circa tre centimetri. Come negli ottoni, cambi di altezza delle note sono controllati alterando la tensione delle labbra ed un suonatore esperto può avere fino a due ottave di estensione. Ci sono molte similitudini con il didgeridoo ma non c'è contatto tra la giara e le labbra del suonatore. Alcuni suonatori usano vocalizzazioni di gola assieme con la vibrazione delle labbra, come nel didgeridoo.

Jugband er et amerikansk fenomen, og de hadde sin storhetstid på 1920-tallet. Det ble spilt på gjenstander som normalt ikke brukes for å lage lyd, som vaskebaljer, vaskebrett, skjeer, ovnsrør, kam og papir. Nazwa (jug - dzbanek) spowodowana była głównie doborem "instrumentów". Z powodu biedy muzyków nie było stać na normalne instrumenty, więc używali ich substytutów. Na przykład perkusję zastępowały garnki i dzbanki, rolę kontrabasu pełniła drewniana balia z przeciągniętymi przez środek cienkimi linkami. Równie częsta była gra na grzebieniu i tarce. Do jednego z najbardziej znanych jug bandów należy Memphis Jug Bands. Wielu znanych muzyków bluesowych rozpoczynało swoją karierę właśnie od jug bandów.
