Juan Luna y Novicio was a Ilocano Filipino painter and a political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the 1800s. He became one of the first recognized Philippine artist and he painted in the manner of the Spanish and French Academy during his time. He painted literary with historical scenes and his works dealt with politics, harmony and theatrical poses. He was appreciated for his confident and forceful brushwork.

Actualment es troba al Museu Nacional de les Filipines. En el seu retorn a les Filipines, va ser arrestat dos anys sota sospita de sedició. Essent perdonat posteriorment. El seu germà, el general Antonio Lluna, fou un participant actiu en el moviment insurgent Katipunan.

- Juan Luna y Novicio was een Filipijnse schilder. Luna werd geboren in Badoc in de noordelijke provincie Ilocos Norte als derde van zeven kinderen. Hij is een afstammeling van de Cala familie. Luna behaalde in 1974 zijn Bachelor-diploma Kunst aan de Ateneo Municipal de Manila. Hij liet al vroeg zien over talent te beschikken en werd aangemoedigd om te gaan schilderen. Hij reisde naar Rome om daar de klassieke meesters te bestuderen. Hij vestigde zich in Parijs en trouwde met Maria de la Paz, een Filipijns uit een prominente familie. In september 1892 schoot hij uit woede zijn vrouw en haar moeder dood nadat hij was beschuldigd van ontrouw door zijn echtgenote. Hij werd hiervoor 1893 veroordeeld door een Franse rechtbank. De rechtbank veroordeelde hem slechts tot het betalen van een franc per slachtoffer, omdat het een crime-passionele betrof. In 1894 keerde Luna terug in de Filipijnen na een afwezigheid van bijna 20 jaar. Zijn meest bekende werk, The Spoliarium, wordt tentoongesteld in het Filipijns Nationaal Museum in Manilla. Twee jaar na zijn terugkeer werd Luna, wiens broer generaal Antonio Luna een actief deelnemer aan de op onafhankelijkheidsbeweging was, gearresteerd op verdenking van opruiing. Hij werd later echter weer vrijgelaten. In 1898 werd hij door de Filipijnse republiek, die zichzelf recent onafhankelijk had verklaard, benoemd tot afgevaardigde voor de Parijse Conventie en naar Washington, D.C. in een poging om internationale erkenning te krijgen voor voor de jonge Filipijnse Republiek. Luna overleed op 7 december 1899 in Hongkong. Hij was op dat moment op weg van Europa naar huis, nadat hij had gehoord van de moord op zijn broer door leden van de Katipunan.
