Jozias Johannes van Aartsen is a Dutch politician and member of the liberal VVD. He is currently the Mayor of The Hague. Former agriculture minister (1994-1998) and former foreign minister (1998-2002). He was the parliamentary leader of the VVD in the Dutch House of Representatives from May 27 2003 until March 8 2006 when he stepped down because of poor results in the 2006 Dutch municipal election. His successor was Willibrord van Beek, a member of parliament since 1998.

His successor was Willibrord van Beek, a member of parliament since 1998. In August 2006 Van Aartsen announced he would not run as a candidate for the VVD in the 2006 general election.. In a letter to party leader Mark Rutte he expressed his disappointment with the demise of the Second Balkenende cabinet which in his view was uncalled for. He also warned for VVD interparty warring between a populist fraction with a no-nonsense attitude and focus on tax cuts and law and order and a liberal fraction focused on personal freedoms, rule of law, international orientation and education.

Van Aartsen absolvierte zunächst ein Jurastudium an der Freien Universität Amsterdam und war anschließend zwischen 1970 und 1974 für die Parlamentsfraktion der rechtsliberalen Volkspartei für Freiheit und Demokratie (VVD) tätig. Bis 1979 arbeitete er danach als Direktor des Forschungsinstituts der VVD. Seit 1979 hatte er eine Stellung im Innenministerium und wurde 1983 dessen Generalsekretär. Im ersten Kabinett Wim Kok wurde er am 22. August 1994 Landwirtschaftsminister und damit gleichzeitig zuständig für die Fischerei. Nach den Parlamentswahlen vom 6. Mai 1998 wurde van Aartsen in der Neuauflage der so genannten "violetten Koalition" Außenminister und damit Nachfolger von Hans van Mierlo. Van Aartsen blieb Außenminister bis zum 22. Juli 2002. Im Mai 2003 wurde er zum Fraktionsvorsitzenden der VVD gewählt. Am 8. März 2006 gab er jedoch seinen Rücktritt bekannt. Als Grund gab er das enttäuschende Wahlergebnis seiner Partei VVD an, die bei den Kommunalwahlen wiederholt deutlich an Stimmen verlor. Heutzutage ist van Aartsen Bürgermeister seines Wohnorts Den Haag.
