- José Wendell Capili is a poet and academic from the Philippines. He earned his degrees from the University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, University of Tokyo,University of Cambridge and Australian National University. He is an Associate Professor at the College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines, where he was also the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Capili is the author of A Madness of Birds (poetry, University of the Philippines Press, 1998); Bloom and Memory (essays, University of Santo Tomas Publishing House, 2002); Mabuhay to Beauty! (popular culture, Milflores Publishing, 2003), From the Editors: Migrant Communities and Emerging Australian Literature and Salu-Salo: In Conversation with Filipinos. His works have been published in Europe, North America, East/Southeast Asia and Australia, including Literary Review, The Poet’s Voice, Korea Times, Korea Herald, Philippines Free Press, Philippine Graphic, Manila Chronicle, The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Likhaan Book of Poetry and Fiction, Ang Aklat Likhaan ng Tula at Maikling Kuwento, Diliman Review, Bulawan, Solidarity, Caracoa, Anagram, Mabuhay, Sands and Coral, Unitas, Tomas, Budhi, Philippine Studies, Love Gathers All: Philippine-Singapore Anthology of Love Poetry, Flippin': Filipinos on America, and Westerly. Capili worked on a research project involving Southeast Asian Diaspora Writers in Australia at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University. In 2005, he was a Visiting Scholar at the National University of Singapore, University of Sydney; Westerly Centre, University of Western Australia; University of Melbourne; and the University of Queensland. In 2008, Capili became Nestle Philippines' Laki sa Gatas advocate for Bear Brand Milk. He joined the product's other endorsers, Batangas Governor and actress Vilma Santos, Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, Miss International 2006 Precious Lara Quigaman, actor Marvin Agustin and actress Eugene Domingo. On February 27, 2009, the Board of Regents of the University of the Philippines approved the appointment of Capili as Assistant Vice President for Public Affairs effective May 1, 2009 to serve at the pleasure of the Vice President for Public Affairs; and his appointment as Director of the UP System Information Office, effective June 1, 2009 until May 31, 2010.
