- The Joropo is a musical style resembling the waltz, and an accompanying dance, having African and European influences. It is a fundamental genre belonging to Venezuelan and Colombian folklore, specifically to its typical music or música criolla. It is also the most popular "folk rhythm": the well-known song "Alma Llanera" is a joropo, considered the unofficial national anthem of Venezuela. Formerly, the Spanish word joropo meant "a party", but now it has come to mean a type of music and dance that identifies Venezuelans. This is because in the 1700s the llaneros started using the word “joropo” instead of the word "fandango", which was the word used at the time for party and dance.
- Joropo ist ein populärer Tanz und Musikstil (auch Música Llanera) der Llanos, einer Region Venezuelas und Kolumbiens. Der Joropo entstand vor ca. 300 Jahren in Venezuela und Kolumbien. In Venezuela gibt es vier Hauptrichtungen des Joropo: Central, Guayanés, Mirandino und Oriental aus den Regionen im Zentrum, im Südwesten und im Nordwesten des Landes. Die einzelnen Bestandteile des Joropo können zurückgeführt werden auf die Kamelkarawanen der Wüste, die rhythmischen Instrumente der Einheimischen Venezuelas (Maracas), auf barocke spanische Musik, Bach, Soler, auf Flamenco und afrikanische Rhythmen. Alles in allem gibt es 58 Variationen des Joropo, abhängig von den wechselnden Rhythmen (3/4, 6/8), den verwendeten Instrumenten, dem Beisein eines Sängers und der Geschwindigkeit. Die Musik wird meistens von Bauern (Llaneros) bei ihren Tänzen und Festen gespielt, aber während der letzten 25 Jahre eroberte sie die Städte, wo Komponisten fasziniert waren vom Kontrast "roher Energie" und komplexer musikalischer Struktur. Der Joropo basiert auf mündlichen Überlieferungen der einheimischen Bevölkerung.

On distingue trois types de joropo: le joropo llanero, le joropo central, et le joropo oriental. Le joropo llanero se joue avec une harpe aux cordes de nylon, une bandola llanera, un cuatro, et des maracas. Le joropo central se joue avec une harpe aux cordes en métal, des maracas, et le chant. Le joropo oriental intègre des instruments supplémentaires, comme la guitarde, la mandoline, la bandola oriental et quelquefois l'accordéon.
