John R. Adler, Jr. (born 1954) is a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University who specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors as well as trigeminal neuralgia. His primary area of academic interest involves the development of minimally invasive computerized tools for surgery. As a pioneer in the field of radiosurgery, he holds 7 United States patents and is an author on more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. In 1991, Professor Adler founded Accuray, a company which manufactures the Cyberknife, an image-guided radiosurgical instrument that noninvasively ablates tumors almost anywhere in the body. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Accuray from 1999 to 2002, and the Chief Medical Officer up until 2007. Dr. Adler founded the CyberKnife Society in 2002 and served as its President until 2009. He presently serves as a member of the Accuray Board of Directors. John Adler was born in Yonkers, New York. He graduated from Harvard College in 1976, and Harvard Medical School in 1980. From 1980 to 1987 he did his neurosurgical residency at Harvard and in Stockholm, Sweden, where he worked with Professor Lars Leksell. He currently lives in Stanford, California with his wife Marilyn, and has two children, Trip Adler (also known as John III), who is the founder and CEO of Scribd and Britney, a medical student at Case Western Reserve University.
