- Sir John Pringle est un médecin britannique. Pringle est le plus jeune fils d'une famille de Stitchel dans le Roxburghshire. Il étudie dans les universités de Saint Andrews, d'Édimbourg et de Leiden. Il obtient son degré de docteur dans cette dernière ou il fréquente assidûment Gerard van Swieten (1700-1772) et Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777). Il s'installe à Édimbourg, d'abord comme médecin puis après 1734 aussi comme professeur de philosophie morale à l'université de cette ville. En 1742 il devient médecin de John Dalrymple, 2e comte de Stair qui commande alors l'armé britannique dans les Flandres. En 1744 il est engagé comme médecin général des forces britanniques au Pays-Bas par le Prince Guillaume Auguste, Duc de Cumberland. En 1749, après s'être installé à Londres il devient le médecin personnel du Duc de Cumberland. Il se marie en 1752 avec la sœur du Dr William Oliver. Il reçoit d'autres engagements de la cour comme médecin et est fait baronnet en 1766. Son premier livre Observations on the Nature and Cure of Hospital and Jayl Fevers, est publié en 1750. La même année il contribue au Philosophical Transactions de la Royal Society trois articles sur les antiseptiques : Experiments on Septic and Antiseptic Substances qui lui valent la médaille Copley. Deux ans plus tard son plus important travail Observations on the Diseases of the Army in Camp and Garrison le font regarder de nos jours comme un des fondateurs de la médecine militaire moderne. En novembre 1772 il est élu président de la Royal Society. Durant sa présidence il fait 6 discours qui seront édités en un volume (1783). Après avoir dépassé sa 70 année il s'établit à Édimbourg en 1780 mais il retourne à Londres en septembre de l'année suivante ou il meurt en 1782. Un monument lui est dédié dans l'abbaye de Westminster.
