John Ogilvie was a Scottish lexicographer who edited the Imperial Dictionary. He was born April 17, 1797 in Marnoch, Banffshire. He taught mathematics at Gordon's Hospital, Aberdeen from 1831 until 1859. He compiled the Imperial Dictionary (published 1847–1850) using Noah Webster's American Dictionary as its basis, expanding it greatly. He also produced several other dictionaries, including The Comprehensive English Dictionary (1863) and The Student's English Dictionary (1865).
