John Muir (21 April 1838 – 24 December 1914) was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of U.S. wilderness. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, have been read by millions and are still popular today. Das Konzept der Natur- und Kulturinterpretation, das der Informations- und Bildungsarbeit aller Nationalparks in den USA zugrunde liegt, erinnert heute noch daran. 1892 gründete John Muir mit anderen Mitstreitern den Sierra Club, eine der ersten Naturschutzorganisationen im modernen Sinne und heute eine der größten und einflussreichsten Umweltorganisationen Nordamerikas. Dort war er der erste Präsident und behielt das Amt auch bis zu seinem Tod 1914. Muir setzte sich sehr für die Erhaltung der natürlichen Fähigkeiten von Tieren ein und war ein großer Gegner der Domestizierung. Er hielt domestizierte Tiere für seelenlos und nur halb lebendig.
