John Montagu, 5th Earl of Sandwich PC was a British peer. Montagu was the eldest son of 4th Earl of Sandwich and was educated at Eton. He was styled Viscount Hinchingbrooke until his accession in 1792. In 1761, at the age of 17, he joined the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards as a Captain. In 1765, he entered Parliament as Tory MP (although he supported the Fox-North Coalition of 1783) for Brackley, then for Huntingdonshire in 1783.

On 8 March 1766, he married his cousin Lady Elizabeth Montague-Dunk, the only daughter of the 2nd Earl of Halifax. Elizabeth died in 1768 and Montagu then married Lady Mary Powlett, a daughter and co-heir of the 6th Duke of Bolton. Montagu inherited his father's titles in 1792; his eldest child, John, by his first wife had died in 1790 and on his own death in 1814, was succeeded by his eldest son by his second wife, George.
