John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, PC, FRS (3 November 1718 – 30 April 1792) succeeded his grandfather, the 3rd Earl, in 1729, at the age of ten. Il secondo matrimonio fu con la talentuosa cantante d'opera Martha Ray, che aveva vissuto con lui fin dalla giovane età di 17 anni, scandalizzando l'opinione pubblica. Da questa seconda relazione nacquero 5 figli, tra cui Basil Montagu, scrittore, giurista e filantropo. Tra le altre cose, sembra che il personaggio principale di Pigmalione di George Bernard Shaw, all'origine di My Fair Lady, possa essere stato costruito proprio sulla base della personalità dell'amante di Sandwich.
