John Vliet Lindsay (November 24, 1921 – December 19, 2000) was an American politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1959 to 1965 and as mayor of New York City from 1966 to 1973. He switched from the Republican to the Democratic party in 1971, and launched a brief but unsuccessful bid for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination as well as the 1980 Democratic nomination for Senator from New York.

Il reprend son métier d'avocat et tente encore en 1980 sans succès d'obtenir l'investiture démocrate pour la campagne du Sénat. En 1990, malade, il doit quitter son cabinet d'avocat et se retrouve sans protection sociale ni assurance santé complémentaire. Il est alors recruté en 1994 par le maire de New York, Rudolph Giuliani, comme conseiller juridique de la ville. Victime de la maladie de Parkinson, il décède des suites d'une pneumonie à Hilton Head, Caroline du Sud, à l'âge de 79 ans. Sa fille, Anne Lindsay, est une militante démocrate qui a participé aux campagnes électorales de Howard Dean et John Kerry en 2004.
