John Lee was a U.S. Representative from Maryland, son of Thomas Sim Lee. Born at "Needwood", near Frederick, Maryland, Lee was educated by private tutors and at Harvard University. He studied law, but did not practice, and rather engaged in the management of his estate "Needwood". Lee was elected as a Jackson Federalist to the Eighteenth Congress.

  • John Lee was a U.S. Representative from Maryland, son of Thomas Sim Lee. Born at "Needwood", near Frederick, Maryland, Lee was educated by private tutors and at Harvard University. He studied law, but did not practice, and rather engaged in the management of his estate "Needwood". Lee was elected as a Jackson Federalist to the Eighteenth Congress. He served as chairman of the committee of the House of Representatives appointed to escort the Marquis de Lafayette from Frederick City to Washington in 1825. Later, Lee served as member of the Maryland House of Delegates and in the Maryland Senate. He was one of the proponents of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Lee retired from public life, and resumed management of his estate. He died while on a visit to his son in New York City, and is interred in New Cathedral Cemetery, formerly called "Bonnie Brae," of Baltimore, Maryland.
