He was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst before being commissioned into The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1911. He fought on the Western Front during World War I, and was awarded the Military Cross. He commanded British troops in Palestine from 1935-1939, during the Arab revolt.

He was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst before being commissioned into The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1911. He fought on the Western Front during World War I, and was awarded the Military Cross. He commanded British troops in Palestine from 1935-1939, during the Arab revolt. During World War II he commanded the Western (Independent) District, India, as well as being a divisional Commander. He was Assistant Chief of the Imperial General Staff (1942-1944) and was awarded the US Legion of Merit in 1943. He retired in 1946 and was knighted in 1951.
