Father John Emerson (born 1948), who is a native of California, entered the Dominican order in 1971, the same year in which he graduated from UC Berkeley. In 1979 he left the order to join the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). He was ordained a priest in Écône for this same society in 1981 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, but left shortly after Archbishop Lefebvre consecrated four bishops against the wishes of Pope John Paul II in June 1988, along with FF.
