John Eliot was a Royal Navy Captain who briefly was Governor of West Florida from 1767 to 1769. Born in St Germans on 13 July 1741, Eliot joined the Royal Navy and became Captain in 1760. He travelled to Florida and was appointed Governor in 1767, but was noted for committing suicide while in office in June 1769.
