- John Dutton is a British composer best known for his soundtrack compositions including the BBC Trench series and the Heroes and Villains drama series. Playing along by ear to records as a four year old, his parents sent him for piano lessons and he went on to a classical training at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music, London. While at college, experiments with an old synthesizer encouraged him to save up and buy his own studio equipment and he began to integrate electronic sounds into some of his work. This suited his emotive approach to composition. A growing interest in modern jazz and 20th century classical music also helped develop an individual approach to harmony. After leaving music college he was signed to Acid Jazz Records (London) as The Apostles, releasing an album in 1992 and appearing on several compilations including Mo Jazz, Totally Wired and the Soul Jazz sessions. The Apostles are generally considered to have been one of the first successful artists to emerge on the Acid Jazz label. Dutton also appeared as a session keyboard player with several artists including Mary Wells, Junior Walker and the All Stars, Joe Brown, Imagination and Kim Wilde. Dutton's work on short film soundtracks led to composing scores for film and television such as BBC's The Trench, the Spartacus and Richard the Lionheart episodes of BBC's Heroes and Villains and the Big Energy Gamble episode of WGBH's Nova series. Dutton is also the author of several books on keyboard performance and recording techniques, including: Groove Challenge, by Neil Robinson and John Dutton, 2000, ISBN 0953605868 100 Tips for Keyboard You Should Have: Part 1, by John Dutton, 2003, ISBN 1844920054, 100 Tips for Keyboard You Should Have: Part 2, by John Dutton, 2004, ISBN 184492033X Xtreme Piano (Xtreme Series) by John Dutton, 2004, ISBN 1844920402 Basic Keyboard Workout (The Basic Series) by John Dutton, 2004, ISBN 1844920410 Learn to Piano in 24 Hours by John Dutton, 2009, ISBN 184609514X In 2007, Dutton played on Marty Wilde's UK tour.
