John Bonaguro, PhD has been Professor of Health Education and Dean of the College of Health and Human Services of Western Kentucky University since August 2003. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in health education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He earned his doctorate in health education from the University of Oregon in 1978. He began his professional career as a teacher in the inner city schools of Chicago in 1973. After teaching at Phillips and Crane High Schools, he enrolled in the doctoral program in health education at the University of Oregon in 1976. He earned his Ph.D. in Health Education with a supporting area in Community Service and Public Affairs in 1978. His first position in higher education was at Ohio University. In 1984 he was promoted to associate professor of health education at Ohio University, where he was a leader in development of the social marketing approach to health education and health promotion. In 1990 he was selected as the Director of the Drug-Free Rockford Community Partnership in Rockford, Illinois. In 1993 he moved to Ithaca College as Professor of School Health Services and Assistant Dean of the School of Health Science and Human Performance. He subsequently served as chairman for the Departments of Exercise and Sport Sciences and of Health Promotion and Physical Education, before becoming Dean of HS&HP in 2001. In 2003 Dr. Bonaguro was selected as the founding Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Western Kentucky University. Under his leadership the college has seen significant growth.
