Johannes Jacobus Poortman, studied philosophy and psychology at Groningen University under Professor Gerardus Heymans. In 1919 he received his Master of Arts; many years later he would also earn a Ph.D.. He was also a theosophist. Poortman studied at the universities of Hamburg, Genève, the Sorbonne in Paris and in Vienna. From 1932 to 1938 he was member of the Council of the Dutch Society for Psychical Research. From 1958 to 1966 he was a Professor of metaphysics at the University of Leiden.

From 1958 to 1966 he was a Professor of metaphysics at the University of Leiden. After he retired his chair was successively occupied by Prof. Dubbink, Prof. van Vledder and Prof. Gerding. Poortman was the maker of the Repertory of Dutch philosophers, Repertorium der Nederlandse Wijsbegeerte, which can be consulted on line at the site of the Leiden University. He formulated the idea of a hylic pluralism (in Dutch hylisch pluralisme) of the plurality of matter, a model of the universe in which science and metaphysics are no longer contradictory. This vision was explained in his four volume work, Vehicles of Consciousness.

Zijn doctoraat in de Letteren en Wijsbegeerte zou hij behalen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam met zijn proefschrift Ochêma, Geschiedenis en zin van het Hylisch Pluralisme, dat hij publiek verdedigde op 30 november 1954. Poortman was lid van de Theosofische Vereniging en betrokken bij de oprichting van de Theosofische Werelduniversiteit. Hij studeerde in Groningen, Hamburg, Genève en aan de Parijse Sorbonne. Toen bij Koninklijk Besluit de bijzondere leerstoel van metafysica in de geest van de theosofie aan de Stichting Proklos werd toevertrouwd, werd Poortman benoemd als eerste bijzonder hoogleraar om deze leerstoel te bekleden aan de Universiteit Leiden. Deze leerstoel werd in de loop der jaren bekleed door: Prof. Dr. Johannes Jacobus Poortman Prof. Dr. Henk Dubbink Prof. Dr. Wim Van Vledder Prof. Dr. Hans Gerding Zijn Repertorium der Nederlandse Wijsbegeerte werd na zijn overlijden door Prof. Wim Klever aangevuld. Poortman wordt beschouwd als de vader van het hylisch pluralisme of de meervoudigheid van de stof.
