- Joanna Shimkus is a Canadian-born former actress, of Lithuanian descent. She is married to the Bahamian-American film actor Sir Sidney Poitier. As Poitier is a knight, Joanna Shimkus may correctly be referred to as "Lady Poitier"; however, there is no evidence that she uses this title. She was cast in "Les Aventuriers" (1967), French movie by Robert Enrico, with Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. As Laetitia she leaves with her two friends the dreary outskirts of Paris, and they head towards the sultry Congo coast, for an undersea treasure-hunting party. The scene where, in her little blue bikini, she is submitted to the rituals of "crossing of the Line", aboard an old shooner, by young, slender, prancing, bearded and shaggy Alain Delon, and mature, powerful Lino Ventura is anthologic by its joyfull frenzy, friendly exertion, relaxed sexy display and humor. Disguises, bringing in of a sham anniversary-cake under a straw-hat while her friends sing (in a horribly discordant way) : "Happy Birthday to you", and sea-water-buckets battle contrast with the following thrilling sequences... Laetitia will be killed in a shoot-out with pirates, dressed up in a heavy diving-suit and immersed by her two friends into the blue depths ... Joanna Shimkus's movie career continued until the early 1970s, one of her last screen appearances being in The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970). She married Poitier in 1976, and they live in Southern California. Their daughter Sydney Tamiia Poitier is also an actress.
