Sie ist von da an eine seiner engsten Mitarbeiterinnen. 1937 arbeitet sie bereits am Drehbuch für den Film Jung und unschuldig mit. Als Hitchcock 1939 nach Amerika übersiedelt wird sie zu seiner persönlichen Assistentin. Sie beteiligt sich zwischen 1939 und 1942 an fünf Drehbüchern für Hitchcock und geht ab 1942 eigene Wege. Zwischen 1944 und 1950 folgten vier Drehbücher bzw. Drehbuchmitarbeiten für andere Regisseure, gleichzeitig beginnt sie, als Film-Produzentin zu arbeiten. 1955 holte sie Hitchcock zurück, um als ausführende Produzentin seine Fernsehreihe Alfred Hitchcock Presents zu betreuen. Sie war bis 1963 zusammen mit dem Co-Produzenten Norman Lloyd zuständig für die Stoffauswahl, die Besetzung und für die Umsetzung. 1963 heiratete sie den Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautoren Eric Ambler und gibt ihre Produzententätigkeit für Hitchcock auf.

Elle fut engagée comme scénariste par la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer en 1941, puis comme productrice à Universal en 1943. Ella a produit les films Nocturne, Ride the Pink Horse (1947) et They Won't Believe Me (1947).
