The city is on the south coast and is separated from the neighboring city of Changwon by a line of high hills that are aligned from east to west. The city is served by the Korean National Railroad, and is famous for its annual cherry blossom festival every spring. The city fronts on a sheltered, island-studded bay, and is almost completely surrounded by mountains covered with pine trees.
