Often fielded in significant numbers by the Spanish, and at times the most numerous of the Spanish mounted troops, they were proficient at skirmishing and rapid maneuver, and played an important role in Spanish mounted warfare throughout the Reconquista until the sixteenth century. In its original Spanish title "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" by Vicente Blasco Ibanez is "Los Cuatro Jinetes del Apocalipsis" Contemporary usage, at least in Mexico, means "rodeo rider", hence "cowboy".
  • La palabra jinete designa en castellano y otros idiomas a aquellos que demuestran una gran habilidad hípica y máxime si esto se relaciona con sus labores más frecuentes (arrieros, domadores, etc.). Aunque la explicación de la base etimológica a partir de la palabra "zenetha" exige su propio artículo de índole histórica, corresponde aquí decir que los "zenetha" o zenetas o zanatas eran una "tribu" de bereberes que durante la Edad Media rivalizaron con otra no menos importante, la de los zeneguís. Los zenethas al parecer se configuraron como etnia en el Sáhara Occidental y en la margen norte del río Senegal, especialmente tras la invasión árabe. Tal invasión les habría forzado -entre otras cuestiones- a adoptar como parte de su táctica el uso con gran destreza primero de los dromedarios y camellos. La adquisición de tales habilidades se reforzó cuando pudieron montar usualmente a caballo, en especial el tipo de caballo ágil (nada "yihill") y liviano llamado caballo árabe. Esto les permitió un puesto de prevalencia en el Magreb y, sobre todo, en la España medieval dominada por los moros. A partir de entonces es que en castellano se adjetiva como jinete a quien sabe andar a caballo y, especialmente, a quien es campeador o domina las prácticas ecuestres, tal cual sucede con el gaucho, el huaso, el llanero, el vaquero o el charro entre otros.

Dit type ruiter ontstond in de Middeleeuwen als antwoord op de massale lichte ruiterij van de Moren. Tijdens de Reconquista werden jinetes in grote getale ingezet. Ze waren uiterst bedreven in snelle maneuvers en in schermutselingen, en ze speelden een belangrijke rol in de Spaanse oorlogvoering tijdens de Reconquista tot in de zestiende eeuw.
