- Admiral Sir John Jeremy Black, GBE, KCB, DSO, born 17 November 1932 (also known as Sir Jeremy Black or J.J. Black), is a British Royal Navy admiral who served as Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command from 1989 to 1991. Jeremy Black was educated at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and saw service in a number of theatres including Korea and Borneo. He was appointed MBE in 1960 for his work in Borneo but his most famous appointment was as captain of the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible during the Falklands War in 1982. Perhaps fortunate that the Task Force Commander, Admiral Sandy Woodward, selected HMS Hermes as his Flagship, JJ Black was an inspirational leader to his crew, who when required would ensure his men and ship were not put in unnecessary danger, even if this meant a threat to his career prospects, his men and his ship always came first. This was reflected by the Ship's company designing T-shirts with 'There and Back with JJ Black' emblazoned across the front. This slogan later gave Black the title ('There and Back') of his memoirs. Following the end of the war, Black was awarded a DSO. JJ Black continued as Capt of HMS Invincible until March 1983, when he received a tremedous send off by the officers and men in Bridgetown Barbados, before taking up his new appointment. In October 1982, Black was promoted Rear-Admiral and appointed to Admiral Woodward's old position as Commander of the First Flotilla. This was followed a position in the Ministry of Defence as a Vice-Admiral before being appointed Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command from 1989 to 1991. In retirement Admiral Black held the posts of Rear-Admiral and then Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom. These are ceremonial posts within the Royal Household.
