He was elected to the National League All-Star team twice (1998 and 2001). He was selected to the 1998 All Star Game as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, but was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the beginning of the All Star break, thus his first game he pitched in a Dodger uniform was in the 1998 All Star Game. Shaw was probably best known for his split-fingered fastball, which was his strikeout pitch. It was the lack of movement on this pitch that led to Shaw's highs and lows as a major-leaguer.
