The Jeep Commander (XK) is a mid-sized SUV introduced in 2006. It was first introduced at the 2005 New York Auto Show. It is the 7-passenger counterpart of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has much more boxy styling, with an upright windshield and squared-off sides. The roof is stepped for the second and third-row seats (which are mounted higher than the first-row seats), but is disguised, as on the GMC Envoy XL, by a roof rack. It also features three moonroofs called "Command View".

While the Jeep Wagoneer was the Commander's initial inspiration, it is built upon the WK Grand Cherokee and resembles the discontinued third generation Jeep Cherokee (XJ). While the Commander was originally speculated to be canceled upon the introduction of the new Grand Cherokee in 2011, new rumours suggest that the Commander will be extended until 2016 to keep the plant above 80% capacity. It may be refreshed in the near future, however, but is going to keep the third seating and traditional 'boxy' Jeep styling. The Commander offers a base V6 engine with an optional new Hemi: The Jeep commander comes with the optional entertainment package which includes a DVD player and TV and rear parking camera 3.7 L PowerTech V6 (2006-Present) 4.7 L PowerTech V8 (2006-2009) 5.7 L Hemi V8 (2006-Present) In Europe and certain other markets like Chile, South Africa, and South Korea, the Commander offers a V6 Diesel engine developed by DaimlerChrysler with BlueTec technology: 3.0 L CRD V6 Turbo Diesel, 160 kW (218 hp DIN) and 510 N·m (376 ft·lbf)

Der in Deutschland ausgelieferte Commander wurde anfangs bei Magna Steyr in Graz/Österreich hergestellt. Seit 2008 kommen die Fahrzeuge direkt aus dem Chrysler-Werk in Detroit. Seine kantige Karosserieform erinnert an den alten Jeep Cherokee XJ, steile Fensterflächen und Scheinwerfer sowie ausgestellte Radhäuser sollen besonders maskulin wirken. Im Gegensatz zum Grand Cherokee ist der Commander außerdem mit sieben Sitzplätzen ausgerüstet. Der Commander war anfangs in zwei Ausstattungsvarianten (Sport und Limited) lieferbar. Der Sport markierte hierbei die Basisausführung mit Stoffsitzen und ohne Chromzierteile, während der besser ausgestattete Limited mit Ledersitzen inklusive Sitzheizung und Einparkhilfe aufwartet. Seit dem Modelljahr 2008 sind in Deutschland nur noch der Limited und der Overland (seit 2007) verfügbar. Der Overland stellt die Luxusausführung dar. Hier sind ein exklusives Innenraumpaket mit Lederbezug für das Armaturenbrett sowie ein Navigationssystem enthalten. Den 5.7 Hemi gibt es ab 2008 nur noch in Overland-Ausstattung. Als mögliche Motorisierungen in Europa dienen ein 160 kW (218 PS) leistender 3,0-Liter-V6-Dieselmotor von Mercedes-Benz sowie der 5,7-Liter-Hemi-V8-Motor. Der 4,7-Liter-V8 mit 170 kW (231 PS) wird seit 2008 nicht mehr in Europa angeboten, nebenbei steht in den USA noch ein kleinerer 3,7-l-V6-Benziner mit 157 kW (214 PS) im Programm. Alle Fahrzeuge sind ausschließlich mit Allradantrieb inklusive Geländeuntersetzung ausgestattet und werden über ein Automatikgetriebe von Mercedes-Benz geschaltet. Die Preise liegen auf etwa gleichem Niveau mit dem Grand Cherokee.
